Whatcha' Readin?

Summer is here in all it's blazing hot glory and I am taking shelter with my books and a good dose of A/C. I'm enjoying The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at the moment. Its a mystery to me why I haven't read any of Doyle's stories (sorry for the shameless pun) before this point in life. Maybe I mistakenly thought because of how long ago the stories were written, they would be predictable. Not so. Even though Doyle uses the same pattern and even some similar character and motives - the endings are almost always a surprise. Either that, or I'm dense, or easily confused. Really, what I love are enough hints to keep me guessing and few secrets to make the reveal very satisfying.  (I blogged a little more about Mr. Holmes at MMW.)

I'm also reading The Book of Mormon this summer with the youth in our ward. They are challenged to read it before school starts again in the fall. It's an ambitious schedule - one that keeps me on my toes - or rather, in the reading chair.

Next up when I finish following the sleuth - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I've heard good things about it and will be checking it out soon.

So what about you? What are you reading this summer? I want to hear all about the good books you've found to stay cool - or rather, distracted from the heat. If I get enough (or any) responses - I'll compile a book list.

Glad Guernsey is next in your queue--I hope you won't be disappointed. Next on my list is The Hunger Games. I don't know much about it, but have heard good things. I'll be anxious to see other people's recommendations!

Hands down Hunger Games is the best. I'll be curious to see what you think of Guernsey. I couldn't get through it and returned it to the library before finishing. I hated the format.

I read Sherlock Holmes when I was a teen and loved them. Loved Hunger Games and have ordered the third book Mocking Jay that is coming out in Aug. I have the Guernsey book on my to read list but it is down a ways so let me know what you think since Valerie wasn't big on it I am not moving it up the list soon. I just finished Wayfarer by R.J. Anderson. If you liked Wings and Spells you will like Wayfarer. I also just finished Stephanie Meyer's new one the Short Second Life of Bree Tanner considering you know at the first the ending will not be happy it was engaging. I am in The Passage by Justin Cronin. Great blog.

Okay, haven't even read Hunger games yet - when does Mocking Jay come out? I think I was going to time it so that I wasn't waiting too long for book three to be in the stores!

Besides my "Adolescents in the Internet Age" textbook, I am reading Guernsey right now, and Hunger Games is next--which I guess is what everyone else already commented. Your friends must all think alike, Tamara!

Currently reading: Pen on Fire

To read list: Abinadi by H.B. Moore, Illuminations of the Heart by Joyce DiPastena, The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy and In the Center of the Storm by George Tenet.

You know I loved Hunger Games but hated the ending, so refused to read any more until the third one came out so since Mocking Jay is out in August, maybe I should move Catching Fire to my list.

Scarlet Pimpernel is terrific. Different from the movie (which I LOVE), but still really good. I thought of another one my book club recently did-- The Robe by Lloyd Douglas. It's out of print, so let me know if you want to borrow it.

I just read Being Sixteen, it was passed on by the girl who babysits my kids. A good read. I picked up a wad of books at the local bookstore but any spare moments this summer will probably be dedicated to writing.
