They're on my list. We bought the movie but I hate the idea of seeing the movie before I read the book. I just seems wrong. I'll be curious to see what others have to say...
Read ALL the books, and though I loved the action and humor, I also had to have that pertinent discussion with my children about our beliefs versus mythology. Not necessarily a bad thing, considering how I love teaching moments with my children. LOVED the movie. They did a superb job portraying the book. Seriously we were all pleased. Match JK Rowling? Probably not, but not because of the writing or storyline by any means. Those were well contrived and written.
I read the Lightening Thief, but it didn't hold my interest. I had to force myself to finish it. Carson felt the same way.

I'm so glad you asked! I LOVE Harry Potter. A lot. And in my opinion, the Percy Jackson series is no more than a Harry Potter knock-off. The similarities are so obvious, it's almost embarrassing:
An average teenage boy finds out he's something special. He goes to a school for special kids like him, meets two good friends (1 boy, 1 girl), sets out to vanquish a foe who everyone thought was defeated long ago.... You get the picture. Don't waste your time!
But then, there are plenty of others who love both. To each his own.... :)
I read the whole Percy Jackson series. The first book was hard for me to get into since the voice of the book (12-year-old Percy) turned me off. It seems like that got better -- or maybe I didn't mind it so much -- in the other books. While definitely not up to Harry Potter standards, I enjoyed reading them.
I also read The Red Pyramid. Same thing with Percy Jackson -- entertaining, but not Harry Potter.
My son demolished these books. Literally. The covers are all missing, pages creased and mangled... He's only read them about seven times each. I picked them up on his recommendation.
The action slows to points of boredom, but the humor is what keeps me coming back. I'm half way through #4, and really have enjoyed them. Looking forward to when Riordan has smoothed his art a little more.
